Canyon Creek Fossil Gallery, May 2nd-June 29th 2026

Canyon Creek

Canyon Creek is comprised of different formations and has two different areas, both from marine environments. One of the areas is from the Carboniferous period around 350 million years ago where you can find corals, brachiopods, crinoids, gastropods, and a single trilobite has been found a bit farther away from the area. The other area is from the Jurassic period around 150 million years ago. As of now we haven't been to this part yet but there you can find things like, belemnites, and potentially ammonite shells if you're lucky. From personal experience the area also has a lot of ticks so try to stay on the paths and out of areas with lots of foliage and long grass and check yourself for ticks after hiking here just in case. There are also lots of very cute marmots around in rocky areas and sometimes right next to the path. You may also see mountain goats on some of the cliffs as well!

Can you Take Fossils From Canyon Creek?

While the fossils here are really amazing, as far as we know you are not allowed to take fossils out. But you can still take pictures of your fossil finds and the surrounding nature which is a lot better than nothing.
